Blepharoplasty - Eyelid Surgery

Cosmetic and functional blepharoplasty surgery performed by specialist plastic surgeon, Dr Rodrigo Teixeira

What is blepharoplasty (eyelid surgery)?

A blepharoplasty is a surgical procedure to address excess eyelid skin, hooded eyelids and lift droopy eyelids which can occur as we age.

At your consultation Dr Teixeira will conduct a thorough evaluation of your concerns and discuss your options for eyelid surgery and tailor a treatment plan.

Types of blepharoplasty procedures

Upper Blepharoplasty (Upper Eyelid Surgery)

Upper blepharoplasty, also known as upper eyelid surgery, is a cosmetic procedure that focuses on improving the appearance of the upper eyelids. This procedure is ideal for individuals who have sagging or drooping upper eyelids, excess skin, or protruding fat pockets.

Dr Teixeira regularly performs upper eyelid blepharoplasty, as well as tarsal fixation upper blepharoplasty. It involves making a discreet incision in the natural crease of the eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. This results in a more defined eyelid contour and a refreshed appearance.

Tarsal fixation upper blepharoplasty, on the other hand, not only addresses excess skin and protruding fatty tissue but also lifts and supports the remaining upper lid skin. This technique can provide longer-lasting results and improve the stability of the upper eyelids.

Upper blepharoplasty can be performed under either local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s preference. An upper blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately one – two hours to complete.

Lower Blepharoplasty (Lower Eyelid Surgery)

There are multiple techniques that can be used during a lower blepharoplasty. For example, transconjunctival lower blepharoplasty involves making an internal incision on the lower eyelid to tighten and address fat pockets. Meanwhile, transcutaneous lower blepharoplasty involves making an external incision just below the lash line to eliminate excess skin and fat. A canthopexy, lower eyelid tightening procedure can also be performed as required.

A tailored approach is adopted for each patient meaning that up to four synergistic surgical techniques may be used, including fat pocket repositioning, lower eyelid tightening and even laser skin resurfacing for the most effective results.

Lower blepharoplasty can be performed under either local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s preference. A lower blepharoplasty procedure takes approximately two hours to complete.

Ethnic Blepharoplasty

Some patients of Asian descent prefer the monolid appearance and wish to maintain it, seeking blepharoplasty primarily to remove excess skin. Others may want to change their appearance by having a more defined upper eyelid crease, opting for double eyelid surgery.

During double eyelid surgery, an incision is made in the upper eyelid to remove excess skin and fat. The remaining eyelid tissue is then reshaped to create a crease, resulting in a more prominent eyelid fold. This procedure is highly individualised, with the position and shape of the lid fold discussed and determined during the consultation process.

Mono and Double blepharoplasty can be performed under either local or general anaesthesia, depending on the extent of the surgery and the patient’s preference. The procedure typically takes between one and two hours to complete.

Risks and Complication

With any surgery there are potential risks involved.

Some possible risks of blepharoplasty include:

  • Bleeding
  • Infection
  • Scarring
  • Chronic pain
  • Dry eyes
  • Asymmetry
  • Difficulty closing eyes
  • Sensitivity to sunlight or other bright light
  • Ectropion (pulling down of the lower eyelid)
  • Temporary or permanent changes in vision
  • Very rare chance of blindness

General anaesthesia also carries a certain level of risk such as allergic reaction and breathing difficulties, although these risks are quite rare. In addition, general side effects like allergic reactions, swelling, bruising, slow healing, tissue necrosis (especially in smokers) and fluid accumulation may occur.

It’s important to follow all pre and post-operative care instructions provided by your specialist plastic surgeon to reduce the likelihood of complications.

Surgery and Recovery

Understanding the recovery process and what to expect after your blepharoplasty surgery is crucial for a successful outcome. Dr Teixeira will provide you with detailed post-operative instructions to guide you through the recovery period, ensuring your comfort and safety.

Recovery Tips:

  • Manage Swelling and Discomfort: After the surgery, it is normal to experience some swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort around the eyes. Applying cold compresses and taking prescribed pain medications as directed by Dr Teixeira can help alleviate these symptoms.
  • Protect Your Eyes: To protect your eyes during the recovery period, avoid activities that could strain or damage them. Wearing sunglasses when outside can protect your eyes from sunlight and wind. Additionally, avoid rubbing your eyes and be cautious to prevent any accidental trauma.
  • Eye Lubrication: Use lubricating eye drops as recommended by Dr Teixeira to keep your eyes moist and comfortable. This helps to prevent dryness and irritation, which are common after eyelid surgery.
  • Rest and Avoid Strain: Give your eyes time to heal by avoiding reading, screen time, and other activities that can strain your eyes. Rest your eyes frequently.
  • Avoid Contact Lenses: Do not wear contact lenses until Dr Teixeira advises it is safe to do so. Stick to glasses during the initial recovery period.
  • Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle: Follow a balanced diet and stay well-hydrated to support overall healing and recovery.

Most patients can return to their normal activities within one to two weeks after the surgery. However, it is crucial to attend all follow-up appointments with Dr Teixeira to ensure that your recovery is progressing as expected.
